The Seagull Nebula (IC 2177) has lost its way and is nearly 3700 light-years from the nearest kin on Earth. A collection of three large hydrogen collections, this nebula serves as a massive interstellar nursery for star formation.

Ever wonder why there is so much red in these images? Typically the red is from emission nebulas where the energy of the stars ionizes the surrounding gas (makes them give off an electron). That electron doesn't make it far and it gets recaptured losing its new found energy. That energy (if it joins back with hydrogen particle) is given off as red light. As most of these clouds are largely hydrogen, you get a lot of red. Plenty of other colors and way for light to illuminate gas in the night sky,,,but more on that on another date.

So not everyone loves birds (I personally think this looks more like a Phoenix).....this one is massive in the night sky. First of all, look at the head of the seagull and that bright star (HD53667) which is 20 times more massive than the sun. The wingspan of this bird if you were able to see with your naked eye is 7 times as wide as the fullest moon in the Earth night sky....all watching over you!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
